ART IN THE PARK:
Visitors to the fourth annual Art Beat event in Whangarei
on Saturday were kept entertained for hours by an array of artists
and their work.
"People were dropping in thinking they were just there for
a short period of time, and staying all day," said organizer
Helen Thorburn.
"Kids were running from one activity to another."
Here at the Cafler Park event is Charlie Chaplin imitator Canadian
Michael O'Neil, who joins in with a belly-dancing routine.
Another North American involved in the event was Miami-based
painter Ingrid Cabrey.
She described Art Beat as very special. She was one of the artists
running a stand that gave hundreds of children a chance to try
to paint, and learn a little more about the art.
Cabrey has been living on a yacht in Whangarei for
more than a year, having been attracted to the area by an article
about its supportive arts environment in an American boating
magazine.
"I did find that there's a wonderful arts community,"
she said.
Now about to leave, she expects to be back and to find an even
larger Art Beat on her return.
